When you drag an email from Mail.app, you are not dragging a file but a pointer to a file, so the option to File copies the pointed-to file. You can only tag files, not the pointers. Whgen you drag and drop from Mail to your Desktop, you are creating a copy (notice how it doesn't disappear from Mail). Since you now have a file on your Desktop, you can tag that file. Does that make more sense?

Two options…
1. Get MailTags from Indev Software. They use OpenMeta Tags and allow you to Tag from within Mail.app. Many of our Users seem to like it (though I can't advocate it, for legal reasons).

2. If you don't have to Tag in Mail, you can

A. Drag an email out onto your Desktop if you don't have one there - or you can hunt down email files in your ~/Library folder.
B. Open Leap's Preferences, switch to File Type Groups and press the plus button to add the type.
C. Navigate to the email file or drag and drop them to the window if it's more convenient. Press open when you've selected the file.
D. This resolves the file type based on what Spotlight reports. Press save and you've added the email type.
(Note: You may find .eml and .emlx files. I added both to the group.)
E. Now in the orange Source menu you will see Email (or whatever name you gave it). Clicking on it will attempt to find emails at the current location.
(I drilled down to specific accounts in my ~/Library/Mail folder and created Bookmarks for incoming and outgoing emails.)

Some people may not like this method because it's not in Mail or think they can't read the mails. If you select an email and press Spacebar you can read it in a QuickLook window or invoke the Loupe. It may take some folder exclusions, etc. to get things where you want it but I personally use this method (though I don't tag a ton of emails).

Hope this helps. Cheers!
Jim

If IronicSoftware wants to continue to treat space as delimiting a tag, then perhaps they would consider allowing the user to use "option space" as a non-breaking character, which is traditional.

Here's another issue to consider.

1. Using CaseApp's Tags.app, the user applies a multi-word tag (i.e., one with spaces in it,whether breaking or non-breaking) to a file, "Foo". Suppose the tag is: New York
2. In Yep's browser window, the user selects a different file ("Bar"), clicks in the tags pane on the right, and then types Ne
3. Yep responds with an auto-completion popup, that includes New York (this part of the example assumes option space).
4. Suppose the user then selects New York from the popup.

The expected response is this:
- The tag "New York" will be applied to the file, "Bar".

Yep's actual behaviour is this:
- To apply "New" and "York" (without the quotes) to the file, "Bar". I.e., two tags.

This infelicity could easily be fixed. (It's important to keep compatibility with OpenMeta apps. The different OpenMeta apps have different features. It's natural for the same customer to use more than one of the apps.)

So, my recommendations are:
1. Allow Yep users to use non-breaking space within the a tag.
2. Respect other OpenMeta applications' use of spaces (non-breaking or not) in auto-complete.

I would take it a bit further:
3. Provide a Preference in Yep for Delicious style treatment of spaces (spaces separate tags) vs. natural style (user must hit enter/return to break a tag).
3.1 Make the default natural style.

These are just improvement requests. Yep is an extremely useful app. I recommend it to my customers.

I suggest dropping Ironic, Spot Documents and anything else related to these LOSER LOSER LOSER developers. They have ZERO respect for their customers and feel that communicating is beneath them. They can't articulate a roadmap for Ironic because they don't have one. Let's call a spade a spade. Who knows if the original developers are even involved in Ironic these days??? They can't be bothered to post here or show their longtime customers an ounce of respect by responding to questions about the future of the company.

Ironic apps are clearly languishing. Bugs haven't been fixed for years. Suggestions are always greeted with the same response. The insipid, annoying, and totally ineffective blue frog just promises to add them to some list. Yet nothing happens. No new features. No bug fixes. Version 3 is basically version 2 with a few code tweaks and Mac App Store compatibility. Basically they're trying to get you to pay for the same application again.

I had huge respect for Ironic when Tom and Ted still cared about their users. Now they've decided to abandon ship and have left captain blue frog in charge while it sinks. The disrespect shown by Tom and Ted is unbelievable. Buyer beware. Only a moron would give these guys a penny!

I can comment that this is an aspect of a larger issue I've had stretching back years! I've eventually accepted that there just isn't a way to work functionally with .emlx files outside of Mail.app, especially if modification and/or creation dates are important to you (as they are to me). I'm a non-geek to a large degree, so I can only trust the word of others. But what I understand is that Apple have just not created .emlx to be used by other applications; so there are likely to be problems.

The solution I've found (very recently) was eventually provided by Ironic's Tom, through his other company "Spot Documents / Keaten House". It's an app called "Email Archiver", and it works very simply by archiving e-mails in the ~/Documents folder as PDFs. The PDFs have the creation & modification dates of the .emlx originals, and EA will apply any existing openmeta tags to the PDFs as well. (And of course you can tag them later in Leap, or whatever … ) EA is working brilliantly and seamlessly for me now, so I now just ignore .emlx files.

Hope that helps ...

A hotkey to open the DropZone would be a very welcome feature, but it would be really great if it could open to tag the currently selected files, so we should not drag the files to be tagged on the DropZone.
I have tried HoudahSpot for a while (don't worry, I'm not leaving Leap :-) and one of its nice features was the customizable keyboard shortcut that you may use to open its "Tray window" in tagging mode: it is implemented as a service menu item, so you can customize it in System Preferences > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > Services. I had set the "Tag Selected File" shortcut to Ctrl-Cmd-T.
Apart from this new feature, I second what hdendy and others wrote about the actual DropZone implementation: it's very annoying when I'm using the Finder and the DropZone opens anytime a file is dragged anywhere, even when I have no intention to tag/file it. Another welcome addition that could solve this issue is to add a configurable keyboard modifier (Cmd-Ctrl-Alt-Shift in any combination the user likes) so that the Drop zone would appear only when the dragged files come near the Drop zone's screen edge and the chosen modifier is pressed (also this idea is borrowed from HoudahSpot :-)

Ditto to Danny's question: fix submitted and waiting, or fix not done yet?

Comment: As a long-time loyal customer, who values kindness, patience, etc - and who has benefitted from some great support from Ironic down the years - I don't like saying these things at all .. But: it's surely undeniable that Ironic has been scaled back development-wise. That situation places us users in an invidious situation in the event of a critical bug like this. The Ironic team of former years would have had this fixed, along with thorough daily communication, very promptly. (Granted the app store setup makes it less simple … ) But it does appear that there now just isn't sufficient support time available to fix a bug that doesn't just make the app a bit compromised - it makes it impossible to run it at all. When you rely on it as a central feature of your file management, that's pretty dire.

Tip: in case it helps someone, I've managed to revert to the v3.0.1 for now. It involves some fiddling with Time Machine and file permissions. Retrieve a copy of the v3.0.1 app file from the backup >> get into Finder info for that file >> unlock and add your user account to the permissions as read-write >> substitute v3.0.1 in place of v3.0.2 in the apps folder (may need to do the same permissions thing with the v3.0.2 file first) >> should then be good to go.
